The Playlist I Built at 3 A.M. and Never Sent

Fourteen songs, one deleted message, and the evidence that I am a coward with excellent taste.

The Playlist I Built at 3 A.M. and Never Sent

Runtime: fifty-one minutes. Status: drafted, sequenced, titled, never sent. It lives in a folder I named something boring on purpose, so that if anyone ever borrowed my laptop they would find only a document called Taxes. The playlist itself is called something I won't print here, because even I have limits.

I built it at three in the morning, which is when bad ideas dress up as brave ones. The first song was easy, an opening gambit, casual, the sort of thing you could shrug off if it landed badly. By track four I'd stopped pretending. By track nine I was arguing with myself over a four-second transition as though the fate of two people depended on it.

I built it at three in the morning, which is when bad ideas dress up as brave ones.

What's absurd is how much craft went into a gift I never intended to give. I swapped two songs because the key change felt too eager. I cut a track you'd have recognized immediately and replaced it with a deeper cut you'd only find if you listened the way I do. A playlist is a love letter written by someone who is allergic to love letters.

I almost sent it twice. The first time my thumb actually hovered. I watched the little arrow like it might change its mind for me. The second time, a text from the bar said we were out of limes, and I took that as a verdict from the universe. Fate works in strange currencies, and tonight it chose citrus.

So it stays in the folder, a perfectly sequenced secret, aging like a good bottle. Maybe someday it goes out. Maybe it just keeps me company on nights like this. If you're the type who builds things you never send, there's room for you on TheFriend, where you can tell me the track list and I'll tell you whether I'd have pressed send.

If you've got a playlist hiding in a folder called Taxes, bring it to TheFriend. I'll read the track list and tell you honestly whether I'd press send.
